How to Make Homemade Henna Tattoos

Henna, a natural herb with dyeing properties, has many cosmetic uses. From hair dye to tattoos, it is an excellent natural alternative for those seeking a temporary new look. Consider this fun activity for slumber parties for a memorable treat.


Instructions:

Mixing the Paste

1. Pour the distilled water into the saucepan until there are two inches of water. Bring the water to a boil and place the tea bag in the pan. Remove from heat and allow the teabag to infuse until the water cools.
2. Add three drops of eucalyptus essential oil to the water and infuse overnight.
3. While the liquid is infusing, place one trouser sock inside the other and fill with the henna powder. Tightly close the socks with the rubber bands and place the socks into the plastic container. Place the lid on the container and shake the container as hard as possible until the henna has sifted through the socks. This will ensure a smooth final product by eliminating any large pieces of the leaves.
4. Place the filtered henna powder into the bowl and slowly add the liquid you infused with tea and eucalyptus. Begin by adding one-half cup of the liquid and mix with the disposable spoons, as this mixture will stain plastic and wooden cookware. Continue adding the liquid until the henna is the consistency of yogurt.
5. Add the lemon juice and ground cloves and mix well. The mixture should be the consistency of toothpaste. If it is too thick, add some of the remaining liquid until the desired consistency is reached.
6. Pour the mixture into the plastic zipper bag for storage until it will be used. Henna paste will keep for two days.

Making the Tattoo

1. Wash the area of the skin where the henna will be applied with soap and warm water to remove all dirt and oils.
2. Use a cotton ball to rub some eucalyptus essential oil on the skin, this will help the tattoo remain on the skin for a longer period.
3. Take some of the henna paste from the zipper bag and place it into the pastry bag. Pipe the desired design onto the skin, being careful to work slowly to avoid inconsistencies in the lines.
4. Henna paste dries quickly, but avoid touching the area for at least 4 hours to ensure it is completely dry. Brush the henna paste off the skin and rinse the area.
5. Henna designs typically last a week, but can remain on the skin up to three weeks depending on the strength of the henna and the care taken when washing.
